5 questions for Fender Undiscovered winner Hattie Briggs

Last month, Fender hosted its first ever Undiscovered Artist of the Year event. On the night, London-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Hattie Briggs took home the Undiscovered Artist of the Year accolade.

Inspired by Jeff Buckley and Foy Vance, Hattie will be supporting Lucy Rose at the 02 Shepherd’s Bush Empire as part of her prize winnings.

MI Pro editor Laura Barnes caught up with the musician to find out more about her music and what she has planned for the future:

Tell us a bit about yourself, when did you starting playing and what sort of music do you make?

I've been a singer for as long as I can remember, but I started taking guitar lessons when I was around 7 and began teaching myself piano at 17 – around the same time that I wrote my first song.

My music is very honest and often based in reality, which means people seem to connect with it on a personal level. I don't think I fit into one particular genre, but I guess it's a fusion, of indie pop, folk, soul and Americana.

Congratulations on winning Fender Undiscovered 2017. What does that mean to you and how do you think it will benefit your career?

It feels amazing to win something musical, especially as it's Fender Undiscovered's first year.

It's also great to know that I've earned the respect of the judges, who are knowledgeable, both about the technical side of music as well as the industry side.

I was so touched by all the support from old fans and new, who helped me to win by voting and sharing with friends. I hope that it will give me some good momentum going forward, especially when applying for festivals and booking tours for next year.

Tell us about what gear you use.

So, thanks to Fender I now have two beautiful acoustic guitars, a Fender Paramount PM-3 along with my older guitar, a Yamaha LS16.

On stage I tend to keep things pretty natural as the focus is on the song writing rather than the effects. I have a Boss tuning/mute pedal and a Fishman Loudbox Mini that I use as a DI and for on stage monitoring. Fender has also given me a fantastic new acoustic guitar amp that I can't wait to try out!

I also play keys, and for gigs I travel around with a Roland RD-64.

Do you have any releases, projects or plans coming up?

I've got a whole load of new material that I'm keen to share with the world, so I'm planning on releasing a bunch of singles next year, probably every other month, with a few tour dates surrounding each one as well as regular spot gigs.

How can we hear your music?

You can hear my music on all digital platforms including iTunes, Spotify etc, you can order a CD from my website shop page or you can come to a gig!
