London Mayor Sadiq Khan unveils plans to protect music venues

The Mayor of London has announced his new planning strategy for the capital, which includes the ‘agent of change’ principle, meaning those who bring about a change take responsibility for its impact.

This principle has the potential to protect more and more music venues in London, many of which have faced issues of the years, and in some cases closure, due to noise complaints from neighbours.

Sadiq Khan’s new strategy would mean developers have to take account of the impact of any new scheme on pre-existing businesses like music venues before going forward with their plans.

This means a developer of new flats would take responsibility for soundproofing to avoid the risk of new neighbours complaining about noise from a music venue.

Industry body UK Music has welcomed Khan’s draft London Plan.

“London is a global music city. Music tourism alone generates over £1 billion for the capital and attracts over 3.5 million people every year to gigs and festivals,” commented UK Music CEO Michael Dugher.

“Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and Night Czar Amy Lame are to be congratulated for recognising that beyond its success the sustainability of music and the night time economy face real challenges which need to be supported by planning decisions.

“We encourage all Londoners to have their say on the London Plan and critical proposals to protect music venues.”

According to the Music Venue Trust, 35% of music venues have closed in the last decade.

UK Music research indicates that total spend by music tourists visiting smaller venues in London decreased by 16% last year, as well as 44% reduction in the number of overseas music tourists visiting the capital to attend gigs at smaller venues.

The draft London Plan, which also includes positive proposals for Creative Enterprise Zones and Cultural Quarters, is open to consultation and will come into effect in Autumn 2019.
