American singer, guitarist and record producer Tom Petty has died at the age of 66, reported TMZ on Monday evening – although the publication has updated its reported that he is still clinging to life at the time of writing.

Petty was rushed to a hospital in Santa Monica on Sunday night after he was found unconscious, not breathing and in full cardiac arrest, says the publication, which previously reported that a decision was made at the hospital to pull life support due to the rock icon having no brain activity.

Petty had just wrapped his latest tour, which ended at the Hollywood Bowl last Monday.

The musician, singer, songwriter, multi instrumentalist and record producer, was best known as the lead singer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. He is also known as a member and co-founder of the late 1980s supergroup the Traveling Wilburys, and his early band Mudcrutch.

Petty has sold more than 80 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. In 2002, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
